Carl Robertson
Carl Robertson was born severely deaf in the left ear and profoundly deaf in the right ear. At one year of age, Carl was fitted with hearing aids and his parents made the conscious decision of teaching him how to talk and lip-read with the assistance of speech therapists.
Carl attended mainstream schools at both primary and high school levels and was the only deaf student there. He was also an active student in both sports and extra-curricular activities such as Drama and Choir.
Carl has a younger deaf sister and two younger hearing brothers and his hearing mother is a teacher of the Deaf.
Carl attended Edith Cowan University and gained a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He is currently doing his Graduate Diploma of Education for Primary Studies and is this years recipient for the ‘Leadership Scholarship Grant’ awarded by the Western Australian Deaf Council.
A keen sportsman, Carl represented the Western Australia State Team for the Australian Croquet Association Championships in 2000 and 2001 and represented Australia in the New Zealand Croquet Open Championships in the year 2000.
Carl lives with his partner of seven years who is also deaf and they recently came back from an exciting and worthwhile 3 ½ month European trip.
Carl is currently employed as a Carer and as a relief Education Assistant.
From his own experience as an Education Assistant at Primary School and High School, Carl can see the benefit of having a deaf mentor and assistant for hearing impaired students.
