The Role of a Mentor

The Hear For You mentors are hearing impaired. They communicate orally and share their life experiences.

A hearing impaired mentor, someone who has experienced life’s ups and downs, can instill in young deaf people the desire to say to themselves: “If he or she can, so can I.”

Their role is to:

  • proactively support and encourage young deaf people
  • give advice based on personal experience and knowledge
  • act as a role model to give these young people
  • provide emotional support whilst talking confidentially or openly about feelings and issues
  • share information regarding extracurricular activities and future prospects

The characteristics of the Hear For You mentors who have had a variety of personal experiences and achievements include:

  • will to succeed
  • self-motivation
  • organisational skills
  • impartiality
  • compassion
  • articulateness
  • cheerfulness
